Omexom New Zealand teams up with Te Whangai for native planting

As part of Omexom New Zealand’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and community engagement, a team of 15 employees from across the business — DSP, IFP, TSP, and Support — came together for a tree planting event at Blackgate Reserve in South Auckland.

In partnership with Te Whangai Trust, nearly 600 native plants were planted along the stream to help restore and enhance the local ecosystem.   The planting included a diverse mix of native species such as:

  • Carex secta and Carex dipsacea– vital for stabilising stream banks and improving water quality
  • Cordyline australis (Cabbage Tree) – a striking feature of the New Zealand landscape
  • Chionochloa cookianum ‘Emerald Gem’ – a hardy ornamental grass
  • Mānuka and Kānuka – known for their ecological and medicinal value
  • Harakeke (Flax) – a culturally significant and versatile native plant

Te Whangai Trust is a community-led social enterprise that combines environmental restoration with social impact, and provides training, employment, and support to individuals facing barriers to work. To date, Te Whangai has raised over 3.6 million plants and supported nearly 3,000 individuals into employment, education, or community service.

It was a rewarding day of teamwork, learning, and environmental stewardship—an inspiring example of how business and community can work together to create lasting impact.
