Omexom staff honoured for decade of service to St John Youth

Omexom New Zealand staff Brent Vaile, Electrician and Fleet Stores Warehouse Coordinator in the Infrastructure Services Perimeter at Mount Wellington, was recently recognised for his outstanding commitment to youth development.  Brent was presented with a 10-year service medal from Hato Hone (St John).

FUN FACT: Did you know St John dates to 1070 AD? That’s a lot of history! Find out more about the history of St John in New Zealand.

Brent’s journey began in the Royal New Zealand Navy, where he served for nine years from 1995, finishing his tenure as a Leading Marine Electrician.  After leaving the Navy, he qualified as an electrician, a trade that continues to shape his professional life.

His involvement with St John started in 2006 in Taranaki, not as a leader, but as a parent supporting his son, who had joined the organisation as a “Penguin.”  The Penguin Programme is St John’s entry-level youth initiative for children in school years 1 to 6.  It focuses on building confidence, teamwork, and values such as honesty and courage through fun activities and badge work.

By 2015, Brent had stepped into a leadership role in Taupō, where his entire family was actively involved in the programme.  His dedication saw him rise through the ranks to become Assistant Divisional Manager.  After relocating to Auckland, Brent continued his service in Henderson before being appointed Divisional Manager of the Massey Division in 2022.  He now leads a team of four leaders and oversees around 11 cadets.

Brent’s pride in the programme is deeply personal. His wife, also a leader with 10 years of service, works alongside him in Massey Division.  In 2024, two of their children achieved the Grand Prior’s Award, a milestone that reflects years of dedication.

To earn this award, cadets must complete six compulsory and six optional badges at the Gold level, attain Level 2 First Aid certification, and contribute at least 100 hours of community service.  The award is presented in a formal ceremony by the Governor-General of New Zealand, underscoring its significance. Brent’s story is a testament to the impact of St John Youth — both on the young people who participate, helping them grow into confident, capable citizens and on the families and communities who support them.
